Building Relationships through Dance & Movement

The goal of the weekly Elders Academy session was to  demonstrate how dance movements can be used to build relationships. Participants included Hayes/Laguna community members of varying abilities and memory, gerowellness interns, and staff.

After an explanation of the four stages of an exercise regime (warm-up, aerobics, resistance, and cool-down), Cuo,  visiting dance therapist, demonstrated sitting stretches and breath work .

During the resistance stage (muscle building), interns and elders worked in pairs. When Cuo progressed to aerobics, community members started dancing.  The floor livened up.

Intergenerational relationship building through non-verbal dance & movement, and other forms of meaningful engagement. That’s AgeSong.

Basic Care Is an Opportunity To Interact

by Sean

Combing a woman’s hair can mean all the difference in the world to her. Just the thought of being there for someone when she needs attention.  She may be asking for something completely different from what she says, because the thought of saying what she really needs to say escapes her mind. It’s also the way you care for a person. She knows if you are just doing it as a routine. When you show that you really care, it makes the world of difference to her.

AgeSong Elders Love Company – Become an AgeSong Volunteer!

Get them going and they will dance and sing the afternoon away, tell their life story, take you on a voyage to places in the mind you’ve never explored, keep you focused on what’s right before your eyes, and spin tales of a lifetime. But they need your listening ear, your gentle guiding spirit, your ability, through gestures or words, to stimulate their senses, liven their day, engage them, and be meaningfully engaged by them.

Volunteer at AgeSong’s elder and assisted living communities to experience meaningful engagement. Your life will never be the same.

Volunteers provide a valuable contribution to AgeSong’s programs that foster diversity and loving exchanges between volunteers and residents who have diverse experiences in life.

We all benefit when elders remain engaged in the world. By integrating our inner community with our outer surroundings, and by offering residents encouragement, support, and opportunities for growth, AgeSong programs counter loneliness and isolation, and encourage learning and community involvement. You Can Help!

Our approach to remembrance events is evolving. For example, have you ever considered a green burial? Do you know what a home funeral is? Would you like to be at your own memorial before you’re gone? There is a definite comfort in coming together with others to remember someone. People are increasingly planning personalized, creative events at locations that hold special meaning. Truly, the possibilities for a meaningful remembrance event are endless.

Suzette Sherman, Founder of SevenPonds, will present the changes taking place around end-of-life. She will also introduce a sampling of options and considerations for the contemporary thinker looking for a personalized and memorable event.
