Are Unused Items Taking Up Space in Your Attic, Closet, or Garage?

AgeSong is introducing Enrichment Baskets providing “meaning-based, relational care” for all members of the community.

We welcomes safe items that can fit into a 12″ x 13″ container,  such as games, books, blank photo albums & journals, photos, favorite cds, tea party supplies, travel, spirituality, and relaxation supplies. The baskets can be used by residents themselves and by visitors, as well as staff, gero-wellness students, and volunteers. Each Enrichment Basket will be filled with meaningful, safe items to engage our residents’ senses, memories and connection to others. If you’d rather sponsor an Enrichment Basket financially, your check toward this important project will be gratefully accepted.

AgeSong Duo Rocks the Crowd Last Two Minutes of Race

San Francisco. June 16, 2013. To claim that you completed the Half Marathon, you had to reach the Finish Line within three hours.  Marlena del Hierro and JoJo qualified by passing the Finish Line within two minutes of the three hours. It’s not that Marlena wasn’t in top shape and hadn’t been practicing for months.  It’s that she was pushing, for 14 miles,  200 lbs. of a svelte Josie on her assisted mobility chair. At the end of the race, Josie, who never thought she’d walk again a few years ago, rose from the chair and walked over the finish line. For AgeSong spectators and many others, this duo came in first place!

A Passion for Traditional Chinese Arts

Cherk, Creating Chinese Brush Paintings in His Later Life

Cherk is a man of Chinese origin who emmigrated to the United States from Hong Kong in his late teens.  For over 30 years he worked as a local Muni bus driver.  After retirement, he became the president of an influential family association which was very important to him.  Cherk has always had a passion for traditional Chinese arts, particularly opera and Chinese brush painting.  He is self-taught except for taking a class as a young boy in Chinese brush painting to learn how to paint shrimps and crabs.  He has created Chinese brush paintings periodically throughout his life.  Cherk is now enjoying creating unique Chinese brush paintings at AgeSong and working with Christina, an art therapy counseling intern.

Christina, Pursuing a second Master’s Degree in Art Therapy

Christina began interning with AgeSong Institute’s Gero-Wellness Counselor Program in February 2012 and completed her hours to become a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC).  She has a Master’s degree in Counseling and is currently pursuing a second Master’s degree in Art Therapy.  Through her volunteer work at a local hospital interacting and creating art with patients that have cancer and life threatening illnesses, she discovered her passion in working with others using the medium of art and decided to pursue a career path in art therapy.  Since January, 2013, Christina started her art therapy counseling internship at Age Song and has really enjoyed her work. She took a Chinese brush painting class last year to learn more about this beautiful art form and to embrace her mixed ethnicity as a Caucasian/Chinese individual. She began working with Cherk in February, 2013, and was thrilled to watch his art progress and his whole approach to life expand.

DSC_0002The AgeSong Cafe serves great, wise “elderfood” for individuals of any age or stage. On Saturday, May 18th,  Encore! The Talk Show for Seniors brings Older Americans Month center stage at the AgeSong Café, 602 Hayes Street, San Francisco, Ca 94102, Taped before a live audience on Saturday afternoon, May 18th, the event will feature Stagebridge, games, prizes and more.

“Encore! The Talk Show for Seniors’ expansion beyond the Berkeley community-based market was driven by audience suggestions and the urging by professionals from a variety of Bay Area communities” stated Dave Hossfeld, Co-host and Co-founder.  “We are thrilled to have booked our show to tape at the AgeSong Café in San Francisco this year commemorating national Older Americans Month.  We admire CEO/Co-founder Nader Shabahangi and appreciate the positive impact AgeSong brings to our aging Bay Area population” said Co-host Dave Hossfeld. “Our hats are off to Marge Betley and the superb cast and performers of Stagebridge.  They epitomize this year’s theme Unleash the Power of Age with Music and Stage.  We look forward to spotlighting them on our show for this year’s taping of our National Older Americans Month Special” stated Co-host Lela Logene Butler.

Stagebridge brings to the AgeSong Cafe a line-up of vocalists, pianists, musical revues, and storytellers: (a) The Dreamers, a popular vocal trio’s harmonies from the 1920s–1950s with Cindy Carrico; (b) Linda Wilson, and Scrumbly Koldewyn, who also accompanies on the piano; (c) Never Too Late,  the longest running show at Stagebridge, accompanied by Scrumbly Koldewyn on the piano; senior storytellers who captivate audiences with personal and fictional stories that are charming, poignant, funny and heartfelt.

“On our show we make senior lifestyles our business spotlighting housing, healthcare and financial programs and services to benefit our community audiences,” notes Co-host Dave Hossfeld.  “Yes, and we do this with relevant conversations, educational information and joyful play in a talk show taped before a live audience and aired on public access television” continued Co-host Lela Logene Butler. According to Hossfeld, “Our non-profit television show has been entertaining trans-generational audiences since 2011.  We look forward to serving our friends in San Francisco in May, San Rafael at the Whistlestop Senior Center in June and back to Berkeley Community Media in July.”
